Russian aircraft conducted more than 100 takeoffs and landings on the Navy’s Ivan Gren-class Landing Ship during recent exercises.

The exercises were held by the Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea, Russian MoD-owned Zvezda reported.

The vessels of the class have a displacement of 5,000–6,000 tons and are able to carry up to 13 Main Battle Tanks or 36 Armored Personnel Carriers and 300 marines. They can also carry two Ka-29 airborne assault helicopters. These vehicles provide fire support during the landing of the Marine Corps ashore and throw battle groups of up to ten people behind enemy lines.

Russia is improving this class of ships. Two Improved Project 11711 vessels were built this year, doubling space. These ships can carry a reinforced marine battalion of 500 men.
