Royal Thai Navy to Seek Pakistan's Comments on Use of Chinese Submarine Engine
PLAN Yuan-class submarine

The Royal Thai Navy will seek comments from the Pakistan Navy (PN) regarding performance of China-made engines used on PN Submarines.

Thailand has signed up to buy Chinese S26T Yuan-class submarines equipped with German MTU engines. However, Germany has refused to clear the export of these engines forcing Beijing to offer its home-grown CHD620 engines instead.

Navy chief Adm Choengchai Chomchoengpaet told media on Tuesday that RTN will hold talks with China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co (CSOC) by early next month regarding the engine. This meeting will cover what progress has been made so far in the testing of an improved version of the Chinese CHD620 engine.

Adm Choengchai added that the RTN is communicating with its counterpart in Pakistan, which has also procured the same submarine type, regarding their experience with the engine.
