Hanwha Wins $458M to Mass Produce 120mm Self-Propelled Mortars, Fire Command Vehicles for S.Korea

South Korean arms procurement agency Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) will award Hanwha Aerospace a contract valued KRW 584 billion ($458 million) to mass produce 120mm self-propelled mortars and fire command vehicles.

The 120mm self-propelled mortar has up to 2.3 times the range and 1.9 times more firepower compared to the existing 4.2-inch mortar, and the mortar itself can rotate 360 ​​degrees without rotating the vehicle to respond to target changes.

In addition, the existing method of calculating shooting data manually by the operator has been improved to utilize the shooting data calculated automatically by the fire command vehicle, which dramatically increased the accuracy while reducing the number of operating troops from 32 to 24 based on the company. Effective fire support was possible under the battlefield environment.

After delivering the first mass production of 120mm self-propelled mortars and fire command vehicles to the Army in January 2022, field operability and satisfaction were improved through field operation tests. Mortars and fire command vehicles are scheduled to be deployed to mechanized units.
