India is looking for a new engine to power its Mi-17 fleet due to problems in the supply chain.

The Indian Army is struggling to obtain VK-2500-03 engines and spare parts from Russia, which is preoccupied with the Ukraine War.

The service wants to buy around 25 engines from Indian manufacturers. Feasibility studies have been initiated for this purpose. There is a need for technology transfer for the Indian defense industry sector to produce the VK-2500-03 engine, reports SavunmaSanayiiST.

India operates more than 200 Mi-17 helicopters in different configurations (Mi-17H, Mi-17V and Mi-17V-5) for personnel and cargo transport.

According to the information obtained by Shephard, less than 30% of Indian Mi-17s and modernized Mi-17V-5s are airworthy.
