American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense headquartered in Washington, DC, have announced the delivery of three prototype trucks for the initial phase of the U.S. Army's Common Tactical Truck (CTT) Program.

The multi-phased initiative aims to replace the Army's existing family of heavy tactical trucks, with production potentially reaching up to 40,000 trucks valued at a maximum of $14 billion.

The collaboration between the two defense companies was formed in 2022, presenting a combined effort to compete in the program. The HX3 CTT, the team's proposed solution, is the latest generation within the HX family of trucks.

The HX3 CTT features advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), increased off-road mobility, cybersecurity measures, enhanced survivability, autonomy readiness, and improved fuel efficiency. The company highlighted the truck's focus on soldier safety and protection, pointing out that these capabilities are already present in most commercial vehicles. The truck is positioned as a modern, tactical vehicle with a priority on commerciality, drawing from MAN Truck and Bus commercial truck offerings.

The open digital architecture of the truck supports ADAS and allows for autonomous vehicle operation. Described as a technologically advanced truck, it has an interchangeable protected cab design, drive-by-wire operation, and an open systems electrical architecture enabling the integration of autonomous capabilities. The focus on commonality and modularity across variants is emphasized, covering cargo, tankers, and line haul tractors.
