The Ministry of Defence's Material and Procurement Agency (FMI) in Denmark has been engulfed in a scandal surrounding the purchase irregularities of inflatable boats.

An ongoing quality assurance investigation has uncovered potential errors in both recently acquired and existing inflatable boats, raising concerns about the lack of adequate control and quality assurance measures implemented by FMI over the past few years.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has taken swift action, announcing the initiation of an external legal investigation into the matter. Poulsen conveyed this development to the Folketing, Denmark's national parliament, during a briefing earlier today. "It is too early to draw conclusions, but the circumstances that have been established so far can potentially be serious, which calls for us to uncover the actual circumstances of the case," stated Minister Poulsen.

The identified irregularities have prompted FMI to cease further purchases from the implicated manufacturer of the rubber boat type. Simultaneously, the agency is actively seeking alternative solutions to ensure the continued operational effectiveness of the existing inflatable boats.

While emphasizing the importance of a smooth transition, Minister Poulsen stressed the critical need to prioritize safety and the operational requirements of the Navy. "We must not forget the safety of using the rubber boats and the Navy's operational needs for capacity. Therefore, the work to support the safe operational operation of the rubber boats will also continue in parallel with the external investigation," he affirmed.

In response to the emerging issues, FMI is taking corrective measures by updating the guidelines for the use of inflatable boats. These updates, addressing technical deficiencies, are expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of the rubber boats. Notably, the guidelines revision was initiated in October and is part of FMI's proactive approach to rectify any potential shortcomings.
