The Norwegian government has proposed an allocation of NOK 941 million to Kongsberg, to increase the procurement of the NASAMS Air defence system for the country's armed forces.
"We must enhance Norway's air defence capabilities to more effectively protect both civilian and military objectives from air attacks. The present security climate necessitates the expedited procurement of advanced air defence systems. The conflict in Ukraine has underscored the vital importance of air defence in wartime," stated Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in a press release.
"KONGSBERG has already committed nearly three billion NOK to increase our own production capabilities in air defence and missile systems. We welcome the Government's initiative to introduce new investment plans," stated Geir Håøy, CEO of KONGSBERG.
"We've seen an increase in delivery times. To address this, we aim to order critical parts now to speed up future procurements of NASAMS. Extended delivery periods are a widespread issue in the defence industry, and this initiative is expected to decrease production times," stated Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.
Norway has donated 10 NASAMS to Ukraine and a further 10 were ordered on February 9 this year.
In January this year, the Norwegian government ordered new NASAMS air defence systems to replace NASAMS previously donated to Ukraine. The contract has a value of approximately NOK 1.4 billion, with expected deliveries in 2026-2027.
The contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency includes new multi-missile canister launchers and new Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS. The delivery will provide Norway with the latest generation of NASAMS, developed to meet current and future threats.
