Log Protection for Russian MSTA-S 155mm Howitzer

A Russian MSTA-S 155mm  self-propelled howitzer has been seen in Ukraine with its top and sides padded with logs which reports on social media claims is for protection against rocket-propelled grenades and FPV drones.

According to postings by pro-Russian Telegram accounts, the log-protection kit, despite the quirkiness of the design, provides reliable protection, especially against rocket-propelled grenades such as PG-7VS at impact angles of 60 degrees or more.

The logs are enclosed within a wire mesh cage and appear of a uniform shape and size.

The authenticity of the images could not be verified. The Russian MoD which provides regular updates on equipments used in Ukraine, has not thrown light on this supposed new innovation.

The MSTA-S is one of the most frequently used long range mobile artillery guns in the current war and is also regularly targeted by Ukrainian forces with drones, rocket-launched grenades and munitions-loaded FPV drones.

Russia has tried various means to protect its tanks and howitzers from top attack munitions. Since the beginning of the Ukraine war, tanks with their turrets enclosed in steel cage surrounded by a steel mesh have been seen. The cages are meant to protect the tank where reactive armor cannot be placed such as the turret and hatches.
