The Dutch navy vessel Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman is currently grappling with technical issues affecting one of its weapon systems as it journeys towards the Red Sea, a critical route recently targeted by Houthi rebels.
The problems arose following departure from Den Helder and are actively being resolved, according to Minister of Defense Kajsa Ollongren's briefing to the Dutch Parliament today.
The Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman, a logistical support and supply ship, is en route to the Red Sea to join Operation Aspides, aimed at safeguarding free navigation in the region amidst escalating threats posed by Houthi forces.
Pending the successful completion of necessary tests, Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman will expedite its departure to the operational area.
The vessel's primary mission is to furnish military ships with fuel, obviating the need for them to exit the Red Sea for refueling purposes. Furthermore, the ship will bolster medical capabilities in the area, where demand for such services is high.
The Ministry of Defense has assured that diligent efforts are underway to promptly address the technical issues, ensuring the ship can fulfill its designated role in the operation as planned.
