Romanian pilots are set to commence training flights of the country's newly delivered Bayraktar TB2 combat drones, as announced by Turkey-based drone manufacturer Baykar.
The Romanian Land Forces' initiated reception procedures for the first Bayraktar TB2 earlier this week, according to the Ministry of Defense (MApN). That phase involved the reception of the initial batch of equipment, with completion projected between late June and early July. Following this, Romanian pilots will undertake training flights to become proficient in operating these advanced unmanned systems.
Each Bayraktar TB2 system includes a standard configuration of six unmanned aircraft alongside the requisite command and control equipment. The acquisition is a critical component of the Transformation Program of the Romanian Army, which aims to achieve strategic military objectives by 2040. It also aligns with Romania's Capability Targets within the NATO defense planning framework.
"The acquisition of Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) contributes to achieving the objectives of the Transformation Program of the Romanian Army until 2040 and aims to implement the Capability Targets of our country within the NATO defense planning process," the Ministry of Defense stated.
In August 2022, the Ministry of National Defense sought parliamentary approval to procure three Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aircraft systems, each consisting of six aircraft, at a total cost of approximately $321 million. The comprehensive contract, finalized in April 2023, encompasses not only the aircraft but also a support package that includes ammunition, initial logistic support, and specialized training equipment.
The delivery of the Bayraktar TB2 systems is scheduled across three phases: June 2024, September 2024, and January 2025, respectively. This strategic acquisition underscores Romania's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and maintaining alignment with NATO standards.
