Lockheed Martin has delivered the first Aegis System Equipped Vessel (ASEV) shipset, comprising four AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar antennas, to the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD).
The delivery, completed under a Direct Commercial Sale arrangement through Mitsubishi Corporation, followed rigorous acceptance testing.
Japan is acquiring two ASEVs, both of which are scheduled for commissioning in Japan Fiscal Year 2027 and 2028. Lockheed Martin will continue full system integration and testing of all four antennas at its Production Test Center in Moorestown, New Jersey this year, ahead of equipment delivery to Japan.
The SPY-7 radar features detection and tracking capabilities, designed to counter complex threats and engage multiple targets simultaneously. This capability strengthens the effectiveness of naval forces operating in an increasingly dynamic and uncertain global environment.
Beyond Japan’s ASEVs, the SPY-7 radar has been selected for Canada’s River-Class Destroyers and Spain’s F-110 Frigates. A land-based variant is also in production for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and has been deployed for the Guam Defense System (TPY-6) and the Long-Range Discrimination Radar. In December 2024, the TPY-6 radar intercepted a mid-range ballistic missile during Flight Experiment Mission-02 as part of the Aegis Guam System.
