The Biden administration has notified the U.S. Congress of its decision to approve the sale of MH-60R multi-mission helicopter equipment and related supplies to India, with an estimated program cost of $1.17 billion (INR 9,700 crore).

The proposed Foreign Military Sale includes 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS), data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems, operator interface assistants, and a wide range of spare parts, support equipment, and software solutions. The package also provides training, engineering, and logistical services. Lockheed Martin, based in Owego, NY, will serve as the principal contractor for the deal.

This agreement is part of a broader $2.6 billion U.S.-India defense partnership formalized in February 2020, which covers the delivery of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. Deliveries are expected to conclude by 2025, with the Indian Navy already commissioning its first squadron of these helicopters at INS Garuda, Kochi, earlier this year.

The MH-60R Seahawk, also known as the 'Romeo,' is equipped with a suite of sensors, including multi-mode radar, dipping sonar, and electronic support systems. It is capable of conducting anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and command and control missions. Customizations for the Indian Navy include Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) transponder units developed in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The helicopters also feature enhanced submarine detection systems like the APS-153 multimode radar and a suite of armaments including Hellfire missiles and Mark 54 torpedoes.

The approval comes as the Biden administration nears the end of its term, with President-elect Donald Trump scheduled to assume office on January 20, 2025.
