The U.S. Navy Reserve’s KC-130T Hercules can now refuel a wider range of aircraft following envelope expansion testing at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), completed in early 2025.
The KC-130T, upgraded with the NP2000 propeller system, can now provide air-to-air refueling for naval aviation’s F-35B/C, F/A-18, EA-18, CH-53K, CH-47, H-60s, and AV-8B. The expansion enhances the Navy Reserve’s mission beyond logistics and cargo transport, offering increased operational flexibility.
The tests were conducted by NAWCAD engineers, testers, and military pilots from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 20, along with industry partners. The effort was initiated following a request by the U.S. Pacific Fleet to extend the operational reach of naval aviation and support allied forces.
The KC-130T Hercules is a multi-role, long-range tactical aircraft used for logistical support by the Navy Reserve. This upgrade expands the KC-130T’s role beyond cargo transport, giving the Navy more flexibility during missions.
NAWCAD, based in Patuxent River, Maryland, leads the Navy’s test, evaluation, and research efforts for all aircraft flown by the Navy and Marine Corps.
