Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), and DSO National Laboratories will collaborate with France’s Mistral AI to develop generative AI models aimed at strengthening the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) sensemaking and decision support capabilities.
The partnership will focus on adapting Mistral AI’s Large Language Models (LLMs) and creating a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model suited for Singapore’s defence operations. AI Singapore will provide support in refining these models for mission planning, allowing commanders to process vast amounts of data efficiently.
DSTA’s Deputy Chief Executive (Information), Gayle Chan, highlighted the importance of AI in mission planning, stating that AI-enabled tools will enhance decision-making and SAF’s operational agility. Chieu Hai Leong of DSO National Laboratories emphasized the goal of building an LLM that comprehends local contexts to improve defence-related decision-making.
The flexibility of Mistral AI’s models to operate in internet-separated environments is a key factor in their adoption for defence applications.
