An explosion and fire broke out aboard the Russian refrigerated cargo ship Crystal Asia on March 26 near the South Korean port of Gamcheon, injuring six crew members, two of whom are in serious condition.
The fire was reported at 07:14 local time, according to the Russian Consulate General in South Korea, which is coordinating with local authorities. The vessel, owned by Russian company Trans Wind Fleet, had 23 crew members on board, including 22 Russian nationals.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but initial reports suggest an engine malfunction. Local patrol boats from the Busan Maritime Police Department were the first to spot the fire. The blast caused significant damage, with injuries primarily resulting from glass fragments and the shockwave. Two of the injured sailors have undergone surgery at a local hospital.
No fuel spill was reported, but authorities are assessing potential environmental threats. The Crystal Asia, a 135-meter-long reefer ship built in 1993, may have suffered cargo damage, which could impact perishable goods onboard.
The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, raising speculation over possible sabotage, though no evidence has been presented to support such claims. South Korean authorities continue their investigation into the explosion and its impact.
