The jointly developed Barak Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system has completed a fresh series of operational trials in India, further advancing the strategic defense cooperation between India and Israel.
The tests, conducted by the Indian Navy, included the successful interception of a fast-moving, low-altitude aerial target over the sea. According to Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), this is the latest in a string of successful trials held across India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force throughout the month. The system, known in Israel as Barak 8, is expected to be formally inducted by the Indian Army following the completion of these acceptance trials.
“The missiles intercepted the aerial targets, scoring direct hits and destroying them, demonstrating the system’s operational capability,” IAI said in a statement. The company confirmed that four targets were intercepted at varying speeds, altitudes, and ranges.
Developed by IAI in collaboration with India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Barak MRSAM system features mobile launchers deployable both on land and naval platforms. It is capable of engaging aerial threats at ranges up to 70 kilometers.
The system has already been integrated into the Indian Navy and Air Force since its procurement in 2017. The recent Army trials represent a major step toward full tri-service deployment.
