The U.S. State Department has approved a possible sale of AIM-120D advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs) and associated logistics to Ukraine’s neighbor Poland, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on Tuesday.
The estimated deal is valued at $1.33 billion and aims to enhance Poland’s air defense capabilities and contribution to NATO missions.
According to DSCA, the proposed package includes 400 AIM-120D3 AMRAAM missiles, 16 AIM-120D3 guidance sections, and one AIM-120 instrumented test vehicle. The sale also features encryption devices, missile containers, reprogramming equipment, classified software, documentation, transportation support, and engineering services. The primary contractor is RTX Corporation.
“This proposed sale will improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by providing air-to-air defense to protect Polish and allied forces in transition or combat and significantly improve the Polish contribution to NATO requirements,” DSCA said in its statement.
Although approved by the State Department, the sale must still receive clearance from the U.S. Congress. The DSCA has delivered the necessary certification to lawmakers for review.
