For the first time since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, MiG-35 fighter jets have been deployed to protect Moscow from Ukrainian drone attacks.

Both MiG-29 and MiG-35 aircraft had not been involved in direct combat operations until now, as per Russian media. Over the past few days, MiG-35s have been patrolling the Moscow Military District, launching into the air whenever enemy drones approach. “Several enemy unmanned aerial vehicles have already been shot down with their help,” ANNA News reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian forces have intensified drone attacks, targeting Moscow, the Moscow region, and other parts of the country. In just the past two days, Russian air defenses claim to have downed 524 Ukrainian drones.

Some drones have managed to strike critical infrastructure. Notably, several drones recently hit a fiber optic plant in Saransk, Mordovia, prompting local authorities to declare a regional emergency. On the morning of May 8, the Saransk operational headquarters lifted the drone alert, announcing the “cancel of the drone threat.”

The increased drone defenses come as Russia prepares for the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, raising security across the capital. If ANNA News’s report is accurate, the use of MiG-35s highlights Moscow’s determination to employ all available resources to secure the city.

The MiG-35, developed from the MiG-29 platform, is undergoing state trials and has not yet fully entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF). Recently, military observers noted the jet’s renewed appearance in international arms shows. At Peru’s SITDEF 2025 exhibition, Russia’s Rosoboronexport showcased a MiG-35 model, signaling continued promotion of the aircraft abroad.

A United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) source told Defensemirror.com that “the aircraft is undergoing state trials,” though details on the number of units or entry timeline were not provided.

The MiG-35 is positioned as a 4++ generation multirole fighter, equipped with advanced avionics, an AI-powered target recognition system, Zhuk-AE AESA radar, and thrust-vectoring engines for enhanced agility. Its weapons suite includes R-77 air-to-air missiles and Kh-31 anti-ship missiles, making it a versatile platform for both air superiority and ground attack missions.

While Russia continues to promote the MiG-35 internationally, Ukraine’s own use of MiG-29s—modified to carry Western weapons like SCALP missiles—has pushed Russia to adapt. Analysts note that the MiG-35 offers 25% more thrust, a lighter frame, and greater maneuverability compared to the MiG-29, with enhanced systems for pilot safety, including a G-force protection system and automatic landing capability.

First revealed at the MAKS air show in Moscow in 2017, the MiG-35 has seen few operational updates until now. Its active deployment to intercept Ukrainian drones around Moscow may mark the beginning of its integration into frontline service.
