Leonardo formalized the launch of its Aeronautics Division on May 6, aiming to strengthen its military and civil aviation presence in line with its 2024 industrial plan.
The new division combines Leonardo’s previous Aerostructures and Aircraft Divisions into a unified unit.
According to the company, the Aeronautics Division will manage over 11,000 employees and focus on enhancing Leonardo’s product portfolio while advancing international strategic partnerships. The move is designed to sharpen Leonardo’s competitive edge in both the Italian and global aeronautics sectors.
An Leonardo statement said, “The new Aeronautics Division reflects our commitment to accelerating strategies in aerostructures, fixed-wing aircraft, and the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) markets.”
The division’s creation aligns with Leonardo’s industrial development roadmap, first announced in March 2024, which prioritizes enabling technologies for next-generation multi-domain aeronautical systems.
Industry analysts note that this restructuring places Leonardo in a stronger position to participate in major European and global aerospace initiatives, potentially boosting its role in collaborative projects and advanced aviation platforms.
Leonardo confirmed that the Aeronautics Division will oversee the design, development, and production of both military and civil aviation components, with a particular emphasis on strengthening its aerostructures capabilities — a key area for global aerospace supply chains.
