The KF-21 Boramae fighter aircraft has officially entered its final assembly phase, the Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced today.
According to DAPA, this phase involves integrating all external and internal components of the aircraft, followed by a series of performance evaluations and testing before the jet proceeds to flight trials.
Launched in 2015, the KF-21 development program aims to create an indigenous supersonic fighter to replace the Republic of Korea Air Force’s aging fleet of U.S.-made jets, such as the F-5.
Mass production of the KF-21 began in July last year after years of development and prototype testing. The first completed unit is expected to be delivered to the Air Force in the second half of 2026, with the project currently proceeding on schedule, according to DAPA.
The KF-21 is classified as a 4.5-generation fighter jet, equipped with advanced avionics and limited stealth capabilities.
In June 2023, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a 1.96 trillion-won ($1.41 billion) contract with DAPA to produce 20 KF-21 jets by 2027.
