Ukrainian Rangers Receive Mercedez-based Caracal Vehicles and Kinetic Defense Systems
Ukrainian special forces of the Ranger Regiment received a new batch of Caracal tactical vehicles which are based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 464 SUVs.
The Caracal is designed for rapid deployment and can be airlifted by CH-47F Chinook or CH-53K King Stallion helicopters. It features a modular design supporting various weapon systems and optional ballistic protection. Powered by a 183 kW diesel engine, the vehicle reaches speeds of up to 140 km/h and offers excellent off-road performance.
Ukraine became the first operational user of the Caracal, receiving five units in early 2024, followed by a second order for 20 more vehicles, financed by the German government.
Germany has also delivered the Kinetic Defence Vehicle (KDV), an anti-drone system based on the same G-Class platform. Developed by Diehl Defence, the KDV integrates Echodyne radar and a multi-camera optical suite, enabling 360° surveillance and precision drone interception at ranges of up to 1,000 meters.
In February 2025, a new version of the KDV was introduced, featuring upgraded sensors and a more powerful combat module.
These transfers are part of Germany’s continued military support to Ukraine, significantly enhancing the country’s operational capabilities in modern warfare.
