Several Dutch soldiers deployed in Iraq are currently unable to return to the Netherlands due to the closure of Iraqi airspace, a consequence of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
The affected personnel belong to the 11 Airmobile Brigade, commonly known as the 'Red Berets.' Their mission in Iraq has been completed, but the current air travel restrictions have delayed their departure. It remains uncertain when the airspace will reopen.
A spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Defence confirmed that the safety of personnel remains the top priority. Authorities are also exploring alternate options for evacuating the troops, although no final decisions have been announced.
The deployed unit was responsible for providing Force Protection under the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI). Their primary role involved safeguarding military and civilian advisors operating in and around Baghdad. These advisors, drawn from multiple NATO member states, assist Iraq’s defense and security institutions in building long-term stability.
Defence officials stated they are maintaining regular communication with the stranded soldiers and their families in the Netherlands to ensure support and updates are provided.
