Palestinian Activists Storm U.K.'s Largest Airbase, Damage 2 Aircraft

The U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) is investigating a breach at RAF Brize Norton, the largest Royal Air Force base in the country, after Palestinian activists gained access to the base and damaged two Voyager aircraft.

The incident, which occurred during the night, was claimed by the group Palestine Action. A video posted to social media shows a person on a scooter approaching one of the aircraft while red paint is seen splattered on the tarmac. The group stated that they used repurposed fire extinguishers to spray red paint into the turbine engines of two Airbus Voyager aircraft and used crowbars to inflict additional damage. A Palestinian flag was reportedly left at the scene.

The MoD confirmed that two aircraft were affected and condemned the act as “vandalism of Royal Air Force assets.” A spokesperson said, “Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us.”

RAF Brize Norton, located in Oxfordshire, employs nearly 7,300 personnel, including service members, civilians, and contractors. The ability of activists to enter the site and approach aircraft undetected has prompted serious questions about base security protocols.

Security analysts say the breach could raise concerns not only about perimeter defenses but also about internal monitoring of high-value military equipment. A senior defence source was quoted as saying by BFBS Forces News, “This is an embarrassing breach for the RAF. It’s not just about damage—it’s about how they got in and how no one noticed.”

Thames Valley Police confirmed they have received reports of criminal damage and are conducting inquiries to locate and arrest those responsible.

The Voyager aircraft play a critical role in military operations, including air-to-air refuelling and personnel transport. They are regularly used in missions such as Operation Shader, the U.K.’s contribution to the fight against Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

They were also deployed in Operation Polar Bear, the 2023 evacuation of British nationals from Sudan. Any grounding of these aircraft could have operational consequences, especially if the damage is extensive.

An MoD assessment is underway to determine the extent of the damage and how long the aircraft may be out of service.
