Thales, Kongsberg Form New Joint Venture for Secure Military Communications

Thales and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have signed an agreement to create a 50/50 joint venture focused on secure communications, combining encryption, tactical radio, and secure networking capabilities.

The new entity aims to address growing defense communication needs across Norway, NATO member states, and other allied nations.

The new company will merge Thales’ secure communications and encryption operations in Norway with Kongsberg's communications systems, including its software-defined radio technologies. It will employ approximately 350 people across Oslo, Trondheim, and Asker.

According to the two firms, the partnership is intended to respond to increasing European investments in defense, with specific focus on operational interoperability, faster delivery timelines, and enhanced technological sovereignty.

Revenue for the new company is projected to reach NOK 1.5 billion (€130 million) in 2024, with growth expected to continue toward NOK 3 billion (€254 million) by 2030. This is driven by product complementarities in advanced encrypted networks, tactical radios, and integrated battlefield systems.

In Norway, Thales has supplied encrypted voice and data communication networks for NATO and allied nations, while Kongsberg provides tactical radio and networking systems, including those integrated into NASAMS air defense units and combat vehicles.

The venture will also support defense ties between Norway and France, aligning with broader NATO interoperability goals. The transaction remains subject to standard regulatory approvals before formal establishment.
