U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the United States will impose "very severe" tariffs potentially up to 100% on Russia if a peace deal is not reached in Ukraine within 50 days.
Speaking at a joint press conference at the White House with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump distanced himself from the ongoing conflict. "It wasn’t my war. It was Biden’s war... I’m trying to get you out of it," he said.
Trump voiced disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he had expected a deal two months ago but negotiations have since stalled.
The warning comes amid intensifying Russian aerial assaults on Ukrainian cities and continued calls from Kyiv and its allies for a ceasefire.
The proposed tariffs fall short of a bipartisan U.S. Senate bill that seeks to impose 500% duties on imports from countries that continue purchasing Russian oil and raw materials.
Trump and Rutte also announced a new NATO arms procurement plan.
Under the scheme, NATO will purchase advanced U.S. weapons including air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition and deliver part of the stock to Ukraine.
The initiative will be fully funded by NATO and is designed not to impact U.S. military readiness.
"This will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense without weakening the alliance," said Rutte. "If I were Putin today, I’d reconsider how seriously I take negotiations."
