Israel’s defense ministry confirmed the launch of the Ofek 19 radar observation satellite into orbit on Tuesday night.
The satellite was launched from a test site in central Israel using a three-stage Shavit rocket. The operation was led by the Space Directorate at the Ministry of Defense together with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
Following liftoff, Ofek 19 entered Earth orbit, began transmitting data, and completed initial tests. Engineers from the Defense Ministry and IAI will continue additional tests before the satellite becomes fully operational. Once operational, the system will be transferred to Unit 9900 of the IDF Intelligence Directorate.
The Ofek series of observation satellites has been developed since 1988. IAI served as prime contractor, with contributions from Elta, MLAM, Tomer, and Rafael in developing the satellite, launcher, and rocket engines.
Dr. Danny Gold, head of the Air Force and Space Administration, said the satellite adds to capabilities demonstrated during Operation Am Kalavi, where over 12,000 satellite images of Iran were used. IAI CEO Boaz Levy stated that Ofek 19 will provide all-weather, day-and-night intelligence coverage.
