Israel’s defense ministry, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and Elbit Systems have completed development of the Iron Beam high-power laser air defense system following a series of tests in southern Israel.

First units are expected to enter Israel Defense Forces (IDF) service by the end of 2025.

The multi-week trials, led by the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) with support from the country’s Air Force, validated the system’s ability to intercept rockets, mortars, UAVs, and aircraft under operational conditions. Officials said this concludes the final development phase and clears the way for operational deployment.

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, “Achieving operational laser interception capability places the State of Israel at the forefront of global military technology and makes Israel the first nation to possess this capability. Our enemies from Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, and other arenas should know: just as we are strong in defense, we are strong in offense – and we will do everything to protect the security of Israeli citizens.

IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram described the system as “the first time in the world that a high-power laser interception system has reached full operational maturity,” noting that it will integrate with Israel’s existing Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow defense systems.

Rafael, the system’s primary developer, highlighted its adaptive optics technology that allows for stable and precise laser targeting. Elbit Systems produced the laser source. The companies said operational prototypes of short-range laser systems have already been used in the current conflict and intercepted dozens of threats.

The system will be integrated into Israel’s multi-layered air defense architecture in the coming months.
