India, Russia Form JV To Produce Smerch Rocket Variants

India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Russia’s Rosoboronexport and M/s Splav “SPA” to form a Joint Venture to manufacture five versions of Smerch Rockets based on the technology received from Moscow. Over the last six years, two contingents of the Smerch rockets have been inducted into service by the army. "Smerch rockets are technologically superior having a range of 70-80 kms. After indigenizing the technology of Smerch rockets, OFB will attain new heights in manufacturing of advanced rocket system," the Defense Ministry said. The MoU approved by Indian Defense Minister AK Antony was been signed on Tuesday by all three parties in New Delhi.
