Northrop Grumman has won a contract along with four others to upgrade cybersecurity, command and control, communications and intelligence (C4I) systems for the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) of the US Navy.

The contract is valued at $2.5 billion over eight years.

CANES serves as the bridge to the future of Navy afloat networks, consolidating existing legacy and standalone networks, providing the necessary infrastructure for applications, systems and services to operate in the tactical domain, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"CANES is a significantly faster, more secure and flexible network," said Dave Wegmann, director, maritime command and control systems, Northrop Grumman Information Systems. "Our original network design remains important to ensure CANES affordability and agility in delivering the next generation of C4I capabilities."
