New Indra Sensors for Spain’s F110 Frigates to Increase Stealth, Low Observability

Spanish Defense electronics firm, Indra has signed contracts with Navantia to equip the five F110 frigates of the Spanish Navy with sensors that will make these ships one of the most advanced of the world.

Under the new contracts, the company will supply the Rigel i110 radar band electronic defense system and the Regulus i110 communications interception system, which reinforce the ship's situational awareness and protect it against possible attacks, as well as radar Solid-state multifunction Prisma 25 X, capable of maritime surveillance and low-level aerial targets.

In all cases, it is a new generation of sensors based on flat array technology and high digitization, which are integrated into an innovative integrated mast concept that reduces the radar section of the frigates and increases their degree of low observability.

These arrays also increase the ability to detect and counter threats thanks to the immediacy of pointing the antennas. This technology will allow the Spanish Navy to operate with this frigate in the most varied and demanding scenarios with maximum security, stealth and efficiency.

These projects worth Euro 150 million are in addition to the one that Indra signed last year to implement the AESA S-band electronic scanning radar antenna in these frigates, for work to be carried out in the 2020-2031 period.

The development of this new generation of systems is the result of the work carried out by Indra in recent years within the technological programs linked to F110, in cooperation with the DGAM, the Navy and Navantia. It is also an example of the Ministry of Defense's commitment to reinforcing Spanish sovereignty and technological autonomy.
