Slovenia has agreed to hand over 28 M-5S tanks to Ukraine free of cost, in return for 40 Germany-produced heavy military vehicles.
On September 19, Prime Minister Robert Golob and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz shared views on the current Ukraine crisis among other things.
Prime Minister Golob and Chancellor Scholz agreed to a joint action, so that the Ukrainian side will receive 28 Slovenian M-55S tanks. In return, Slovenia will obtain 40 German military transport vehicles, including 35 heavy 8x8 hook loaders and 5 heavy 8x8 water tankers. As such, the ring exchange will also strengthen defense cooperation between Slovenia and Germany.
Slovenia has upgraded its Soviet-made T-55 MBTs to the M-55S standard with new armor and 105mm gun. The M-55S tank is a combat tracked vehicle characterized by reactive armor and powerful armament intended to destroy the adversary’s live force, armored and other combat vehicles, artillery, anti-tank missiles, bunkers, fortified facilities, obstacles and other fortification facilities.
