The U.S. is considering a Boeing proposal to supply Ukraine with Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) to meet Kyiv's demand for more arms in the shortest possibe time.
GLSDB could be delivered as early as spring 2023, Reuters reported yesterday quoting official documents. The GLSDB combines the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) with the M26 rocket motor, both of which are common in U.S. inventories.
Reuters quoted Tom Karako, weapons and security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies as saying that the U.S. exit from Afghanistan left lots of air-dropped bombs available which could be adapted to be fired from artillery rocket systems.
The GLSDB's 94-mile range would allow Ukraine to hit Russian military targets that have been out of reach of its current HIMARS artillery rockets which have a range of 70 miles.
GLSDB is being jointly by SAAB AB and Boeing and has been in development since 2019. It is not yet known if the weapon is fully qualified for depoyment. There are no known customers for this system. It consists of a Small diameter bomb (also called GBU-39) and a rocket launcher.
According to Saab information, The GBU-39 which would function as the GLSDB's warhead – has small, folding wings that allow it to glide over 100 kilometers if dropped from an aircraft and targets as small as 3 feet (almost a meter) in diameter.
