Ukrainian drones launched a massive drone attack on the Morozovsk military airfield in Russia's Rostov region on April 4, approximately 300 km from the front lines in Ukraine.

The attack reportedly caused between 40-60 explosions at the airbase, which houses 36 Su-34 and 4 Su-24 Russian fighter jets belonging to the 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment (Su-34s) of the 4th Air and Air Defense Army. Five drones were shot down by Russia's air defense systems during the night, according to analysts on social media.

"Air defense units in the Morozovsky region are currently repelling a large UAV attack," Governor of Rostov Oblast Vasily Golubev posted on the Telegram messaging app. "According to preliminary data, air defense forces destroyed more than 40 targets in the Morozovsky region. As a result of the attack, an electrical substation was damaged. Work is underway to restore power supply," Golubev added.

The drone attacks were concentrated in the Morozovsk district, northeast of Rostov-on-Don, which lies on Ukraine’s eastern border.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the airfield has been repeatedly targeted by drones. For instance, on May 25 last year, Russian air defense systems shot down an unidentified object near the airfield. No injuries were reported as a result of the falling debris.

On December 17, the airfield was attacked again, prompting the activation of Russian air defense systems. The Russian military subsequently confirmed that at least one Su-34 aircraft was damaged during the attack.
