BAE Systems has received a £133 million contract from the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium (Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) to further develop its Striker II Helmet Mounted-Display (HMD).

The contract will enhance the Striker II helmet’s capabilities, equipping Typhoon pilots with advanced technology to improve situational awareness in contested airspace.

The Striker II HMD features an all-digital night vision system and a daylight-readable display, which provides real-time mission data directly on the pilot’s visor.

According to BAE's press release, under the new contract, BAE Systems engineers will continue to advance the helmet’s capabilities through a series of flight tests.

This project is expected to secure over 200 skilled jobs at the company’s combat air facility in Warton, Lancashire, and its Electronic Systems site in Rochester, Kent, where expertise in helmet-mounted displays is being developed.

Richard Hamilton, Managing Director of Europe & International at BAE Systems Air, stated, “The Striker II helmet aims to give the next generation of Typhoon pilots a crucial advantage in an increasingly congested and contested battlespace. This continued investment secures highly skilled jobs and brings the helmet closer to production.

The contract is also seen as an essential investment in maintaining Eurofighter’s technological edge. Simon Ellard, General Manager of the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA), emphasized the need to enhance Eurofighter’s capabilities to meet evolving threats, ensuring the aircraft remains at the forefront of innovation.

BAE Systems had previously announced a £40 million contract in September 2023 from the UK Ministry of Defence to develop the Striker II helmet, with flight trials set to begin in the coming months. The latest funding will bring the helmet one step closer to a production-ready standard, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to advancing technology for the Eurofighter Typhoon program.
