The Singapore Army has confirmed that its fleet of Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tanks (L2SG) is fully operational following an isolated technical malfunction involving one vehicle on 5 July 2025.

The incident took place during preparations for the National Day Parade Mobile Column, when an L2SG experienced a partial loss of steering and braking power as it turned towards North Bridge Road. The affected tank was operating within a designated cordoned area.

An internal investigation identified the fault as a malfunction in the conduit that delivers transmission fluid to the service brake, leading to a drop in oil pressure. The issue caused a partial failure of the tank’s service brake and steering function.

The operator, a full-time National Serviceman, responded swiftly by engaging the parking brake in accordance with standard operating procedures, bringing the tank to a safe stop.

According to the Singapore Army, this was the first time such a fault had occurred within its Leopard 2SG fleet. Prior to the incident, the tank had passed routine technical checks with no issues detected.

Following the incident, comprehensive fleet-wide inspections were conducted. These confirmed that the malfunction was an isolated case. RENK GmbH, the original equipment manufacturer of the tank’s transmission system, verified that the fault was previously unknown and will work with the Singapore Army on an enhanced maintenance regime.

All Mobile Column assets, including the L2SGs, undergo thorough checks before deployment,” the Army said in a statement. “Additional checks have confirmed that all Leopard 2SG transmissions are in good working order.”

The Army emphasized that public and crew safety remains its top priority. It also advised the public to follow road marshals’ instructions and keep a safe distance from military vehicles during rehearsals and on National Day itself.

With the issue resolved, the Leopard 2SGs are set to resume their participation in National Day Parade 2025.
