The ASTER B1 New Technology (B1NT) missile has completed its second live test, confirming its ability to intercept aerial threats at a range of up to 150 kilometers and higher altitudes.

The firing took place at the DGA Essais de Missiles test range in France, with officials from France, Italy, and the U.K. in attendance.

Developed by Eurosam—a joint venture between MBDA and Thales—the ASTER B1NT is part of the trilateral FSAF-PAAMS air defense program managed by European intergovernmental organization that manages collaborative armament programs (OCCAR). This second firing builds on the first test conducted in October 2024 and advances the qualification of the SAMP/T NG air defense system.

OCCAR said the launch validated the missile’s enhanced ability to counter complex threats, including targets with high speed, stealth, and maneuverability.

The B1NT missile integrates a Ka-band seeker, upgraded electronics, and new interception algorithms. It is designed to engage a wide threat spectrum, including cruise missiles, aircraft, UAVs, tactical ballistic missiles (SRBM and MRBM), and hypersonic threats.

The missile will equip the French Air and Space Force, the Italian Army, and the Italian Air Force. It will also be deployed on naval platforms such as Horizon-class frigates through the Mid-Life Update program managed by Eurosam and OCCAR.

SAMP/T NG, the platform supporting the B1NT missile, includes up to 48 ready-to-fire missiles, a multi-function radar with over 350 km detection range, an engagement module, and mobile launchers—all deployable within 30 minutes. It operates in civilian and military airspace and is fully interoperable with NATO systems.
