Two of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) latest battle tanks — the Type 99B and the Type 100 — made their public debut at the V-Day military parade on Wednesday, along with the unveiling of the Type 100 support vehicle.

The Type 99B tank has been upgraded with advanced information technology, enabling it to deliver high-precision strikes. The Type 100 series was highlighted for its intelligence-driven systems, mobility, and ability to operate in contested environments.

The Type 100 tank and its support variant reportedly feature stronger firepower, reinforced protection, and enhanced digital intelligence. Their design concepts have been compared to the Type 055 destroyer at sea and the J-20 fighter jet in the air.

Those two platforms boast futuristic designs, featuring multiple photoelectric sensors, remote weapon stations, and active protection systems. These technologies enable the vehicles to comprehensively grasp battlefield situations and defend against incoming anti-tank ammunition and drones, Chinese military analyst Fu Qianshao told the Global Times.

Fu classified the Type 100 tank as a fourth-generation medium tank, with a design philosophy that moves beyond traditional heavy armor. Instead of relying on thicker plating, it integrates active defense technologies to counter top-attack weapons and drone swarms.

A notable addition is the rotor-wing drone carried by the Type 100 support vehicle. The drone can perform reconnaissance, ambush detection, and potentially armed reconnaissance or suicide missions.

Another highlight was the use of wearable augmented reality (AR) devices by operators, enabling 360-degree situational awareness.

The Type 100 tank focuses on precision strikes, using a range of munitions supported by sensors and data links, while the Type 100 support vehicle provides suppressive fire against infantry and light vehicles. Both platforms share the same vehicle body, which experts said lowers production and maintenance costs while boosting interoperability and combat efficiency.
