The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) has officially received its first Patria AMV XP armored personnel carrier produced under license in the country.
The delivery took place on September 2 at the Japan Steel Works plant in Muroran, Hokkaido Prefecture. General Masayoshi Arai, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces, attended the event.
Developed by Finland’s Patria, the vehicle is being manufactured in Japan by Japan Steel Works, which is contracted to build 26 units. The new vehicles are set to replace the Japanese military’s Type 96 armored personnel carriers.
The AMV XP is the latest model in the AMV family of armored vehicles. It offers a large interior volume capable of transporting infantry alongside integrated weapons, communications, and specialized systems. The chassis supports multiple combat modules, including heavy machine guns, automatic cannons, and anti-tank missile launchers. The vehicle is also amphibious, with the ability to travel at speeds of up to 10 km/h on water.
