Massive blasts were heard close to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv following Russian airstrikes on a train carrying ammunition that was supplied by NATO to Ukraine on the evening of September 14.
At first, people living in the Kyiv area reported that they observed a light flash in the sky, and many initially thought that it was connected with an oil depot located close to the Vasilkovsky airport. Ukrainian sources mentioned this scenario as well before the strong secondary explosions indicated a different target.
Eyewitness videos on the internet depicted several flashes and deafening booms. By the time the sun rose, reports suggested the attack had destroyed a train carrying shells and missiles shipped in from NATO nations. The bombs lit up the night sky and were visible in surrounding neighborhoods.
The Ukrainian military had not yet offloaded the shipment, leaving the train exposed to attack. Residents in the area reportedly explained the sequence of blasts as looking like "a mobile warehouse" exploding while in transit.
Both Russia and Ukraine have not issued official statements regarding the incident.
