Japan has received its first Patria AMV XP 8x8 armored vehicle under the Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier (WAPC) 8x8 program.
The vehicle was delivered by Japan Steel Works (JSW) to the Japan Self-Ground Defense Forces (JSGDF) following a handover ceremony on September 2 at JSW’s Muroran plant in Hokkaido, Patria announced today.
The WAPC program was contracted in August 2023, and since then, Patria and JSW have worked jointly on local production, including technology transfer. Japan has become the ninth country to operate Patria AMV vehicles.
The Patria AMV XP 8x8 was chosen to replace the JSGDF’s aging fleet of Type-96 8x8 vehicles. It is a modular armored vehicle used as an armored personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, command post, medical evacuation vehicle, mortar carrier, reconnaissance platform, and engineering support vehicle.
