U.S. DoD Japan MOD Launch AI Project to Secure UAV Operations

The U.S. Department of Defense and Japan’s Ministry of Defense signed a new project deal on September 22 to start the Strategic Advancement of Mutual Runtime Assurance Artificial Intelligence (SAMURAI) program.

The project will focus on runtime assurance (RTA) technology, a system that lets unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with artificial intelligence check their own performance and keep flying safely.

Findings from the joint effort will be applied to the future integration of AI-enabled UAVs with next-generation fighter aircraft. The partners said the work is intended to enhance operational safety, improve interoperability, and reinforce the U.S.-Japan defense alliance.
