U.S. Army Awards Raytheon $1.7B for New Missile Defense Radars
Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radar

RTX's Raytheon has secured a $1.7 billion contract from the U.S. Army to deliver the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS), the service’s new-generation radar system.

The deal includes nine radars — for the U.S. Army and for Poland, which becomes the first international buyer of LTAMDS — along with engineering services, spares, testing, and support.

The U.S. Army cleared LTAMDS for production earlier this year after eight flight tests demonstrated the radar’s performance against live threats. This milestone, known as Milestone C, designates LTAMDS as a formal program of record and opens the path for deployment.

Poland’s Ministry of Defense previously signed a letter of acceptance with the U.S. Army to acquire 12 radars under the Foreign Military Sales framework. With this agreement, Poland becomes the first international operator of LTAMDS.

LTAMDS, built with Raytheon’s Gallium Nitride-powered Active Electronically Scanned Array technology, is designed to provide 360-degree coverage against a wide range of aerial threats including drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons.
