HENSOLDT has handed over the first long-range radar system to the Naval Technical School in Parow, Germany, marking a step forward in the modernization of the German Navy’s Sachsen-class F124 frigates.

The radar, part of the Obsolescence Removal program (ObsWuF LV F124), will serve as a test, reference, and training facility. The land-based installation enables training of naval operators and technicians while also supporting the testing of further developments.

The program, launched in 2021, includes the supply of three TRS-4D LR radars for the F124 frigates and one system for Parow. HENSOLDT is working with Israeli defense company ELTA Systems Ltd., a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), to deliver the S-band radars. These systems will provide the German Armed Forces with ballistic missile defense capabilities for the first time.

HENSOLDT is also modernizing land-based airspace surveillance for the German Air Force under the Hughes Air Defence Radar Successor (HADR NF) project. The radars for both services are largely identical, streamlining logistics and reducing long-term costs.
