Northrop Grumman announced today that it has delivered its first APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) to Lockheed Martin which will be used for US and Taiwan Air Force F-16 radar modernization program.
"Northrop Grumman's fire control radars have provided vital capabilities for the F-16 and other fighter aircraft for the past four decades," said Jeff Leavitt, vice president, combat avionics systems business unit, Northrop Grumman.
SABR was developed as a multifunction, active electronically scanned array (AESA) fire control radar that provides affordable, reliable fifth-generation air-to-air and air-to-ground radar capability to the F-16. Other AESA fire control radars developed by the company are currently flying on the F-16 Block 60, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II aircraft.
APG-83 SABR includes fifth-generation radar capabilities and is the largest synthetic aperture radar map available for the F-16. The AN/APG-83 SABR is a replacement for legacy F-16 radars, and was selected by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. and Taiwan Air Force F-16 upgrade programs.
Northrop Grumman’s AN/APG-83 SABR design enables ease of retrofit, without aircraft structural modifications or changes to the existing cooling and power systems in the F-16.
