South Korea will develop a body measurement system capable of gauging soldiers’ body sizes and analyse the big data collected to produce a standard combat uniform.

"The military will develop a body measurement system which gauges soldiers' body sizes and analyzes them to gather big data. Based on accumulated data, it will predict the most optimal size for combat uniforms for newly enlisted soldiers," an official at the Ministry of National Defense was quoted as saying by Yonhap news Monday.

The new system will automatically make three-dimensional measurements of soldiers on a regular basis. The data built up through the automatic measurement system will be more accurate than that built through the existing manual measuring arrangements, the ministry said.

"If the new system is utilized, it will help the military predict the right sizes of combat suits for soldiers and as a result, cut production costs," the official said.

The ministry said it plans to complete the development of the system by the end of this year and begin the physical measurement of soldiers for data build-up next year.
