Taiwan is reportedly moving closer to acquiring the M109A7 self-propelled artillery from BAE Systems.
According to Taiwanese media, Jinbin Motors signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BAE Systems during the biennial Taipei International Aerospace and Defense Industry Exhibition, establishing logistics support and maintenance services for the M109A7 and M88A2 armored recovery vehicle. The agreement positions Taiwan to have support infrastructure in place in advance, even though the United States has not yet officially announced the sale. BAE Systems stated it is “preparing for the future.”
Andy Corea, general manager of BAE Systems, signed the agreement and highlighted the company’s role as the original manufacturer of several systems already in Taiwanese service. He said BAE would expand cooperation with Jinbin Motors to support Taiwan’s military readiness in areas such as equipment warranty, maintenance, and upgrades.
On the question of whether the M109A7 will be deployed by Taiwan’s armed forces, Yoshi Tanaka, vice president of BAE Systems’ Asian business, said the company had “no comment” since arms sales decisions rest with the Taiwanese government. He added that the agreement is preparation for future requirements.
The potential deal could be included in Taiwan’s special defense budget if approved.
